Sale Report 2022:

The 17th Frontier Bonsmara Auction was held on 17th August under the cloud of the pending nationwide ban on movement of cattle due to Foot & Mouth. On the 15th August the decision was taken to go ahead with the sale, with the understanding that all cattle would be delivered by midnight of the 18th August, a daunting proposition! 152 buyers registered for the sale and the newly renovated Hobson & Co venue was splitting at the seams with close to 300 people by 12 ‘o clock when the sale kicked off. 75 outstanding bulls and 361 strictly screened commercial females came under the hammer of  Brandon Leer, who has auctioned every Frontier sale since inception.
Bidding was brisk from the outset with buyers prepared to pay a premium, especially on quality females bred from Frontier genetics.
The Frontier members were delighted that by offering 75 bulls this year clients from across the spectrum could afford to purchase good quality genetics at affordable prices. Once again the amazing record of never having had an unsold bull on the sale was maintained and more than 80% of the bulls sold to buyers within a 250 km radius of Grahamstown. 7 bulls were bought by stud breeders, but were pushed all the way by commercial farmers. The top priced bull (lot 12), bred by Justin Stirk, was purchased by Tinus Maritz from Vaalwater for R340 000.
The average of R74400 was made up as follows: 6 bulls sold for between R35 000 & R45 000, 10 between R50 000 & R57 000, 34 between R60 000 & R78 000, 18 between R80 000 & R95 000 and 7 sold for R100 000+.
The female prices achieved were testimony to their quality and were as follows:
16 Cows & calves: R28750
143 pregnant heifers (spring calvers): R27635
74 pregnant heifers (autumn calvers): R23013
42 pregnant cows: R26750
55 open heifers: R15790
24 weaner heifers: R12850.
The mammoth task of delivering these cattle before the cut off time began as the sale was concluded, and the last bull was delivered to it’s destination at Tweespruit in the OFS with an hour to spare, an absolute logistical miracle!
