I started my bonsmara herd in 2013 after buying a farm in Paterson I purchased my first cows at the dispersal sale of Kit Thompson when he passed away there after I bought cows from the following breeders at their yearly production sales, Mid Vrystaat (Gerrit Van Zyl en Deon Greyling), Jacusta (Willie en Koos Snyman), Henco Bonsmaras (Hennie Coetzee), and Frontier Bonsmaras (Mark Lake).
In 2016 Meyer Bonsmaras was registered, I offer 180 cows for inspection out of these 120 were selected as appendix A cows , I then only registered my top 80 cows in my stud. I then increased my stud by purchasing cows from the following breeders: Disco Bonsmaras – Boeram Venter), Hotvoor Bonsmaras -Danie Olivier), and Henco Bonsmaras -Hennie Coetzee).
The best decision that I have made is to invest in top quality bulls and I was able to see good results and the improvement on my herd increased dramatically especially with uniformity and confirmation. Bulls were purchased from the following breeders over the years: Frontier Group – JJ Park, Justin Stirk and Craig Handley, Kit Thompson, Henco Bonsmaras, Skatkis Bonsmaras, Hotvoor Bonsmaras, Disco Bonsmaras, Up George, and Mikie Du Toit.
Today my stud consists out of 200 cows and is run on my farm in Kinkelbos where the grazing can be characterized as sweet grass veld. Typical illnesses that we deal with are heart water and red water which are prevalent throughout the year.
