Our story

Frontier Bonsmaras was founded in 2006 after the closure of the East Cape Club sale. Five like-minded breeders from tick infested areas of the Eastern Cape combined to provide bulls to this region from one central point. Paul Hobson was instrumental in setting up the sale venue in Grahamstown, and Hobson and Co conduct the sale each year. Successful sales have been held with an average of R48000 for the bulls. 55-60 bulls and 200 commercial females are sold each year.

Frontier 19 Years On

19 years on, and Frontier Bonsmaras continues to grow in support of our commercial and stud market. The first auction of 2006 saw 30 bulls being sold at the Hobson & Co auction yard. This year 80 bulls and 350 commercial females will go through the ring. Many of the females sold belong to long time clients who invest in Frontier genetics year after year. Quality is a non-negotiable on our auction and all animals are strictly screened to our standards.

We are extremely grateful for the support of our commercial clients. 90% of bulls are sold within a 200km radius of Grahamstown. Commercial farmers are our backbone to success and we are humbled by their support.

Fellow stud breeder support has grown over the years and Frontier bulls have contributed significantly to the National Herd. Bulls such as GCD05148 (grandfather of the famous cow LAR10159), BP0912, BP1017, JRP1281, DAJ1586 and many others can be found in the pedigrees of numerous top breeders.

Frontier Bonsmaras continue to strive to breed tough, thick, early to medium maturing animals that suit the grassland and bushveld areas of our country. All animals are born and raised on the tick and disease infested regions of the Eastern Cape. This ensures that they are tolerant to most health challenges within the borders of South Africa and beyond. Artificial insemination and purchase of top bulls throughout the country help to ensure some of the best genetics available. The diversity of genetics from 5 different breeders on one auction affords the buyer a huge pool to select from.

The dynamics of the Frontier group has changed of time but our principles remain the same. Quality, integrity, humbleness and service to our clients are non-negotiable. Glynn Handley and Peter Knott were instrumental in the birth of Frontier Bonsmaras. They were some of the first Bonsmara breeders in the country and instilled these principles as part of our psyche. Currently, we are 5 members with a combined herd of 1200 cows. Approximately 80 bulls are now sold which equates to 7% of cows mated. All bulls are subjected to the selection standards and principles of the Bonsmara society. A further 3 selections are done by independent expert selectors leading up to the auction. Strict Quality control is of paramount importance to all members so as to ensure success for our clients. It is our policy to resolve any issues that arise as quickly and fairly as possible. We believe that “the customer is always right” and adhere to this principle.  No bulls are sold off the farm. This has ensured that quality control is adhered to.

Frontier is not just an annual sale, but a brand which has stood the test of time because of a sustainable breeding program, strict selection and a passion for functional adaptable cattle
